Yesterday, I was going through some of my favorite blogs when I came across a post on Patchwork Harmony, featuring Norwegian blogger Ingrid Aune Westrum's beautiful house. I recognized some of the rooms from Pinterest and I knew I had to see more, so I clicked over to Ingrid's blog, Fjeldborg. Oh my goodness, her house is amazing! So full of color and whimsical details. I love it, and I think you will too. Sometimes I find a photo I adore on Pinterest, but then I see it so many times I don't notice it anymore. Does that happen to you? It does to me all the time...but if I come across the context of that photo (like this darling house), I might just fall in love all over again!

Ingrid's house has white floorboards and white walls throughout it...it makes the space seem so airy and bright, and is the perfect backdrop for all the splashes of cheerful color!

I love all these graphic black & white pillows, but especially the one with the trees.

I'd seen the photo above and the dining room below on Pinterest...perhaps you have too. But aren't they even lovelier now that you see the rest of the home they belong in--and know that they are from a real person's house, not just photos from a catalog??

A cloud shaped cutting board! So cute.

Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best. I really like how Ingrid wrapped this candle with washi tape, and set it on a simple jar lid.

Long branches as curtain rods--I love this idea!

There is also a driftwood branch in the bedroom, used as an exposed closet...and what a pretty one!

You guys may remember this post, where I talked about painting some bricks gold and making them into bookends. Well, I finally did it this weekend! I added my own twist by painting the bottoms robin's egg blue (you know how I love that dipped/half-painted trend). I really like how they turned out, and it was a cheap & easy project that could be finished in one afternoon.

For this project, you will need a couple of bricks, some gold spray paint, painter's tape, and acrylic paint in the color of your choice. I picked these bricks from my parent's backyard because I liked how the tops of them were jagged and uneven. Then I spray painted both bricks gold (do this outside, with some paper underneath). After they were fully dried, I used blue painter's tape to cover the area I was not going to paint blue, making sure this area was even on both bricks. Then I painted the uncovered area with the acrylic paint! I didn't take any in progress pictures because the process was pretty simple--but let me know if you have any questions!

On a side note, how pretty are these peonies from Ben's parent's backyard?? We've had them for a week and they're still going strong.

Today I just wanted to wish my dad a happy Father's Day! I love my dad--he is a really smart guy, gives great advice, and is always there when I need someone to talk to. But my favorite memories are those where we're all having a good time as a family, playing games or laughing at something random. I'll always remember playing Quelf and seeing my dad stuff as many random objects down his shirt as possible, or riding an imaginary ostrich singing loudly. Downright hilarious. Dad, thanks for being willing to have fun with us, for being a great role model to me, and most of all, for being the best dad a girl could ask for. I love you!

Happy Friday!! We made it! I, for one, could not be more excited for the weekend. I have no big plans for this one, and I'm quite happy about that. Sometimes it's nice not to have everything all planned out, you know what I mean? The most definite thing on our schedule is that tonight we're having people over for dinner...my friend from high school who I haven't seen in a long time (and is pregnant!), and her husband. Other than that...we'll probably do some shopping one of the days (we both have things we desperately need for summer), Ben might go for a hike tomorrow morning, and I have a few projects I'd love to tackle around the house (what's new?). Oh, I also want to make waffles so I can eat them with speculoos. We just tried speculoos for the first time last weekend, and we went right out and bought a jar for ourselves. The stuff is amaaazing. I know, the name is a little off-putting, but give it a try--it's like ground up ginger cookies made into a spread with a peanut butter consistency...and Trader Joe's sells a version of it called cookie butter! Alright, now that I've gone off on a food tangent (what can I say, I love to eat), let's get started with today's post. This week, I found so many inspiring gems around the blogosphere, so I decided to share some of my favorites to make sure none of you missed out! Without further rambling...some lovely links to send you off on your weekends.

First off, this genius shelf that I am totally making myself. Leather straps, a wooden board, some gold paint, and drywall anchors...and you've got yourself an extremely easy and stylish ledge! I love it.

I'm sure everyone who has gotten married recently (or is in the wedding industry) knows of Style Me Pretty...but did you know they also have a lifestyle blog? Yep, they do--and it's chock full of the same pretty, feminine style that you'd expect! I especially loved the house tour of Danielle Moss from the Everygirl (see the full feature here). The mix of gold, black, and white is gorgeous, and I want pretty much everything in this photo. Isn't that gold phone just adorable?

I think I gasped audibly when I saw this feminine & whimsical bicycle shoot, originally spotted on Creature Comforts. The adorable outfit is actually a vintage prom dress (which belonged to the model's mother) with a cardigan on top. Cuuuute! And the pink cruiser? A Craigslist score. I'm jealous...and I'm totally trying to think of a viable reason why I should wear an outfit like this out and about.

For those of you getting married, I thought this ceremony backdrop made with strips of colorful washi tape was so smart. Inexpensive, and it looks amazing! This idea would also work great for behind the dessert table at a bridal shower or birthday party. Check out the full post for more fun geometric ideas, and some half-painted flatware too! I especially loved the faceted terrariums used as candy bowls, so I had to include a picture of those as well (below).

I thought this piece of artwork made with wire and wire cutters was really intriguing and lovely. It says: “all that now exists was once imagined”--a great quote, and a great idea for some budget-friendly art!

Last but not least, I've been eagerly following Smitten Studio's cabin renovation (see more here and here). When I saw this pretty dresser, I could hardly believe it was a $99 Ikea piece! Of course, Sarah made a few changes to it...she's kind of a genius at making Ikea pieces look high-end.

What are you lovely ladies (and gentlemen) up to this weekend? Don't forget, Sunday is Father's Day!!

Whew, this week has been another busy one!! I'm still catching up from our weekend away...I finally finished putting away all the laundry we'd left in a big heap, only to put another load in! And last night I had to do a bunch of grocery shopping because the fridge was nearly bare. Needless to say, I didn't have a lot of time to put together today's post--but it worked out, because I've been wanting to do another "Thoughts for a Thursday" anyways! And the quote I picked is right along those lines: "Taking time to live life will only inspire your work." Don't you think that's a good reminder? I can tend to be a bit of a perfectionist and a workaholic when I'm in the zone and having fun with what I'm doing. I'll admit, sometimes I find it hard to tear myself away from the computer (or whatever task I'm working on). But there's always something more to get done! So I've been trying to say "yes" to life more, and I'm loving it. Every time I've worked out with Ben, hung out with friends, gone for a walk in the sunshine, taken a weekend getaway, etc. it's been really refreshing and rejuvenating. Plus, getting out there sparks fresh ideas--after all, the internet can be a stagnant pool with the same things recirculating over and over again. So living a little is not only good for your body and soul--it's good for your work too!

I added a few new features to the blog--I hope you'll like them! First off, there's a new bar at the bottom of each post with thumbnails from similar previous posts...that way you can discover more ideas if you're new to the blog. Also, on the top of the sidebar, I've added archives (in the search bar) so you can go to a specific month easily. At the bottom of each post, I added links to the previous post and next post, so you can scroll through posts without having to return to the homepage (that was something a few of you asked for--see, I listened!) There's also a new "to the top" button on the right hand side of the page, so you don't have to scroll all the way up manually (I hate doing that on my iPhone). Lastly, if you haven't checked them out yet, I have new pages for FAQs and Shopping! I'm especially excited about the Shopping page, which I hope will be a good resource for you all. I've listed a lot of my favorite shops for clothes, home goods, and craft/party supplies. Some of them, I'm sure, you already know of: Ikea, Anthropologie, Target, etc. But some of them might be new to you--so I thought I'd share a few of my favorites and some fabulous items I'd love to buy from them...you know, if my budget was unlimited!

Under fashion & style: Ban.do. I love this shop for it's cute & colorful hair accessories. I have a headband from them, but I'd love to get a few more things...especially those colorful bobbis for side barrettes!

print & shine bobbi set / heart iphone case / twist scarf / colorful crystal bobbi

Threadsence. My favorite pair of boots is from here! Their prices are pretty good, and they sell lots of cute clothes, accessories, and even have an apartment section! I'm especially eyeing those ankle boots...so cute.

Under furniture & home goods: Bodie & Fou. This London-based company has so many gorgeous pieces that are just my style. I've never bought anything from them, but I'm definitely tempted!

Michelle Dwight Designs. She sells some really darling pillows...I especially love that "we should probably cuddle now" one. Perfect for an accent pillow on the bed!

Under craft & party supplies: Confetti Sunshine. Lots of cute basic party supplies, from paper straws to favor baskets and bags.

Blank. This super cute company is based in Australia, but ships internationally. They have lots of great gift wrap supplies...I love those muslin bags and the neon pink washi tape in particular!

Well, we've talked about exposed closets, bare bulbs, naked cakes, and now stripped shades...sounds kind of scandalous, huh? I admit it, I have a thing for stripping things down. There's something really lovely about showing off the structure of something--it's so simple and honest! I love seeing exposed beams and pipes in buildings, too. Wire frame lampshades are one of the easiest (and cheapest) trends to try, so why not? I recently bought a lampshade with a pretty shape at Goodwill (for $5!) and ripped all the fabric off it. I'm trying to decide what to do with it now. I'm definitely going to hang it over the dining table, but I haven't decided whether I want to paint it, leave it plain, or wrap it with fabric and decorative garlands/trinkets. I know, I know, first I said I was going to do a metal pendant in our dining room, then a drum pendant, and now this...I'm an indecisive girl. Actually, truth be told, I'm just a cheapskate! I was planning to buy the turning pendant from West Elm last month, but then I had this idea and well, a $5 project beats a $150 purchase in my book any day!

I really like how these stripped lampshades have been adorned with bits of fabric, garlands, pom poms, even plastic animal figurines and feathers! The pom pom one on the bottom right looks very similar to the lampshade I have.

Then again, stripped shades look good unadorned as well.

Even if you don't use it as a light, a stripped shade can be a cute decor element--hang bottles with flowers from it, or clip photos onto the wire with clothespins!

This shade was covered in paper feathers, cut from book pages. Sooo pretty!

Stripped shades are also great for an outdoor party, and they're so light you don't even need a tree branch to hang them from--just string some clothesline across the yard and tie a few shades to it! I also like how the shade on the right has been wrapped with colorful strips of fabric (you could also use newspaper, yarn, or twine). Wrapping the wire is a great way to adorn the shade and add some color, while still keeping it simple.

I love the look of these antique, lacy doilies with the bare wire. A lovely study in contrasts.

Last but not least, three pendants are even better than one--and I love how this clever person has strung wooden beads onto the cords...an extra layer of detail, and it reminds me of the turning pendant we almost bought!

I'm planning to hang my shade up this week, then I'll take some pictures to share with you all. I'm still deciding what to do with it...should I wrap it with strips of pretty fabric? Hang pom poms from it? Drape some doilies? Or just paint it a pretty color (mint green perhaps)?

What would you do? And how do you feel about this trend?

Do you guys remember the post I wrote about Smitten Studio, and the super stylish cabin that Sarah and her husband are renovating? Well, they've made a lot of progress since then and it's looking so good. I'm especially loving their kitchen with it's farmhouse sink, open shelves, subway tile, and butcher block counters (pretty much my dream kitchen). And if you're thinking a kitchen this pretty must be way out of your budget, think again--the sink and counters are both from Ikea!

Since seeing their kitchen, I've been thinking more about butcher block counters, and kitchens in general. I don't know why, since it's one of the things I really can't change in our house...but maybe you can? If you're working on a kitchen renovation, you should definitely consider butcher block countertops. Then I will live vicariously through you!

I know a lot of people like granite countertops, but I think they make the room look too cold and dark. Even if I could afford the most high-end granite counters, I would honestly go for butcher block. I love how warm it is, and so pretty...especially paired with white cabinets!

The one thing I have heard is that butcher block can get damaged by water around the sink, which makes sense. If you're worried about that, perhaps you could do light grey marble counters with a butcher block island. I love islands with pendants hanging over them!

Butcher block doesn't always have to be paired with white cabinets either--I think this teal island is soo pretty.

Do any of you have experience with butcher block counters? Did you get water damage around the sink or any other major issues? How did you take care of your butcher block? Or if you're just in the dreaming stage like me...what would your perfect kitchen include?

I'm usually a little slow to embrace trends when it comes to fashion. I guess I'm afraid things will go out of style before I've had a chance to wear them more than a few times. I've never bought a romper, harem pants, a high-low skirt, colored denim, or anything chevron. I've never tried the ombre trend in my hair or in my wardrobe. And my closet includes more striped shirts and dark denim than trendy, fashion-forward pieces. But once in awhile I see something that I know is a trend, but I love just the same. That's how I felt when I first spotted people wearing leather shorts! I love how they're a little dressier than jean cutoffs or white shorts--yet they're basic enough to be worn with lots of different outfits. Ben isn't convinced yet, but I think he'll like them if I get a pair...

Even a loose white T-shirt looks polished with a pair of black leather shorts!

Tell me, what do you think of leather shorts? What fashion trends are you liking lately? And I'm curious, how much do you wear trendy pieces?

Happy, happy Friday! We're heading up to Bellingham for the weekend. What about you--any fun plans?

Now that the weather is starting to get nicer, I've been giving some thought to our patio. It's not a very big area, but it's the first time we've had an outdoor space that is all ours, and I want to take advantage of it this summer! Right now, our patio is pretty empty--just a tree on one side, a big rosemary bush, and some lavender and succulents that Ben recently planted. There are a lot of different ways we could decorate it, so I thought I'd get some input from you all! I took some of my favorite ideas and did some hypothetical shopping for them. Which one is your favorite?

For a shabby chic patio, I would definitely want French style bistro chairs. I'd look at flea markets and antique malls for some chippy, distressed ones--but if you're looking for a quick online option, these ones would do. I'd cover the table with some vintage floral fabric and fill a colored mason jar with flowers. I'd plant David Austin roses, more lavender, and hydrangeas. When guests come over, I'd serve freshly squeezed lemonade, yummy pastries, and strawberries in cute painted berry baskets.

I could also go the route of a bright, modern space--in which case, I'd definitely want some Tolix chairs. They come in so many colors, and they're so cute! I'm actually digging these bright orange ones, or could do a mismatched set of all different colors. I'd keep the look bright and cheerful with colorful flatware and fun dinner napkins. Then I'd serve fruit and crusty artisan bread (with homemade jams and spreads) on a wooden cutting board.

I also think a casual, summery patio would be great for laid-back hanging out. I wouldn't even need a table for this--just a couple of chairs and maybe a galvanized party bucket filled with drinks. I like the idea of painting a few panels of the fence with chalkboard spray paint (although I won't be doing this at my house, since we rent it). But I definitely could add some cuteness with succulents in simple terracotta pots!

I'm always dreaming of the country, so of course I'd love a cheerful, country style patio. We already have a set of white wooden chairs that would work (similar to these World Market ones). I got them when I was in college--$15 for all four! Of course, they're not really meant for outdoor use so I don't know if I'd leave them out all the time. A colorful tablecloth can make even a plain, cheap table look super cute. For lighting, I'd hang mason jars with votive candles from the tree. It seems easy to add your own wire to mason jars, but if you'd rather not deal with it, Pottery Barn sells these ones. I'd also get a cute chalkboard that I could write the menu on when I host outdoor dinner parties...simple country food like barbecue, roasted potatoes, and watermelon...with iced tea served in mason jars!

Lastly, I like the idea of an industrial salvage patio that brings some indoor elements outside. I'd start with a rusty metal bistro set, then plant some herbs in an unusual planter like an old sink. I'd look at thrift stores for cheap mirrors and frames to hang. And I'd definitely get some metal letters to spell something out! This would be the perfect spot to relax with a soda and a good book, the globe lights twinkling overhead!

So, what do you guys think? Which patio style do you prefer?
