4 Ways to DIY Black & White Art

Remember this post I wrote a full YEAR ago, about black and white abstract art? Well, I finally got around to making some! I know, it took me long enough…but hey, black and white is timeless, right? I got motivated when Michaels invited me to help them celebrate their Big Brand Sale (which launches next week), by creating a project using a product from one of my favorite brands. I picked Studio Décor, because I love their selection of frames and wall art. They're super affordable, simple, and beautiful--the perfect complement to some DIY art!

4 ways to DIY black and white art

I love black and white because it’s so classic and easy to work with. It’s foolproof--even the most basic patterns and random shapes look chic and sophisticated in black and white. Case in point: this past weekend, I made four different DIY art pieces, thinking that if I tried a few variations, at least one of them would be good. But as it turns out, I liked all four!

Supplies

To make these, you will need:
Simple black frames (I used these ones)
White scrapbooking paper
Black electrical tape
Scissors
Black paint
Paintbrush
Black Sharpie
Ruler

DIY art with electrical tape

For my first piece of art, I laid down strips of black electrical tape in parallel diagonal lines, equally spaced apart, then cut the ends  so they lined up in a straight edge. I then laid more strips of tape diagonally across the first ones, and trimmed their ends as well. It took me maybe three minutes total--so easy.

Next, I dipped a paintbrush in some black paint and created a random circular pattern.

Easy DIY art ideas

For my next variation, I did some thicker brushstrokes going in every direction.

DIY Sharpie art

Lastly, I wanted to try making some cool art with a Sharpie. I used a ruler as a guide and made short, straight lines going in every direction.

4 ways to DIY some black & white modern art

All of these art pieces were super easy, quick, and fun--and those modern float frames were the perfect finishing touch!

Which version is your favorite?

I like the painted ones the best. The painted lines reminds me of brush strokes when painting Asian characters. I also really like the giant Swiss cross done with a large paintbrush that you featured before... Always wanted to make something similar

Ooh, I do love Swiss crosses too--so many good, easy ideas for black & white art!
